A £2.7M For Northern IRISH Victim Farmers Of The 2017 Flood

The inordinate flood which occurred in Glenelly Valley on August 22, 2017, during Storm Lorenzo saw the washing away of livestock, the destruction of agricultural lands, and the loss of farm businesses. “Once in a 100-year event”. Met Eireann described the flood.

The Tyrone farmers were the victimized ones of this catastrophic flood and have since lamented about their loss of lands and finances. This has lead to their businesses falling into the drain they say. “I spent almost £10,000 repairing the damage to my farm” Damian Carolan a farmer expressed. The victims have pleaded with the government to come to their aid even after three years since the event took place.

The government has finally answered their plea as it has announced the £2.7 million support scheme. “I am delighted to say that this North West 2017 Flooding.

Income Support Scheme, worth almost £2.7 million, is now open to applications,” Minister Edwin Poots said. “I would urge all eligible businesses to make sure their application is submitted as soon as possible,” Minister Poots continued.

This support scheme covers victimized farmers in Glenelly in the area of County Tyrone and is limited to those who applied for a Force Majeure when the event occurred on the 22nd or 23rd of August in 2017.
A total of 200 farms are expected to apply for this support scheme. Minister Poots revealed that the scheme is bound by time and will end on the 12 of August 2021. He explained further that eligible applicants will receive letters from the support scheme detailing how they can apply and complete their application.
However, farmers are expected to complete the application on DAERA Online Services from 28 July 2021 before the said closure date.
“We are pleased that farmers would finally get the financial support they need.” The Ulster Farmers’ Union expressed.
