Abu Jinapor Calls for Tangible Steps in Addressing Climate Crisis as COP28 Approaches

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has urged the global community to use the upcoming 28th session of the Conference of Parties (COP28) as a pivotal moment to take decisive actions in combating the climate crisis.

Speaking at a pre-COP28 event in Accra, Minister Jinapor emphasized the need for COP28 to go beyond business as usual and result in concrete efforts and new targets for climate action.

The event, held in Accra, served as a platform to provide insights into Ghana’s participation in COP28. Minister Jinapor, also a Co-chair of the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership (FCLP), stressed the importance of COP28 in delivering new targets and revised nationally determined contributions (NDCs) with a genuine commitment to implementation.

COP28, scheduled for Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023, holds significance as the first-ever opportunity for global stocktaking on progress made in the fight against the climate crisis.

Minister Jinapor highlighted Ghana’s role in COP28, emphasizing the country’s commitment to forest and nature-based solutions for climate change.

Ghana has secured a pavilion at the Expo City in Dubai to showcase its climate actions, with President Akufo-Addo set to host a presidential event on leveraging nature-based solutions towards the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

During the event, President Akufo-Addo is expected to announce Ghana’s package, titled “Resilient Ghana: Advancing Climate Action for Prosperity.” The initiative is part of the Forest Climate Leadership Programme (FCLP) aimed at addressing forest landscape restoration in alignment with each country’s NDCs.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC) Secretariat led by Mrs. Samira Bawumia, will host high-level events on accelerating forest and nature finance towards 1.5°C. These events align with Ghana’s commitment to implement the communique on actions and roadmap of the conference.

As COP28 approaches, Ghana positions itself as an advocate for nature-based solutions and a key player in global efforts to combat climate change.
