African Leaders Advocate Coherent Agricultural Policies to Tackle Food Insecurity

Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Deputy Ranking Member of the Food and Agriculture Committee in Parliament, is encouraging African governments to push towards enforcing more coherent agricultural policies if food insecurity challenges can be fixed

According to him, there is a lot of incoherence in the agricultural policies of countries on the African continent.

“From the biennial review report from the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme, something is clear: country policies across the programme show incoherence in policy and commitment in agriculture,” he said.

He said this during the 2023 Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The programme entailed discussions on policies, laws, and regulations to help attract investments for the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agriculture and food sectors.

In attendance were experts and policymakers who deliberated on challenges facing businesses and also delved into the critical significance of fostering a conducive climate for enterprises in the food systems industry.

Dr. Jasaw called on African countries to ensure a proper alignment between the work of the executive and the legislature in policing agricultural policies. He also asked that agricultural initiatives be funded on time so as to ensure that targets are achieved.

In addition, former Tanzanian President Dr. Jakaya Kikwete also urged African countries to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to improve agriculture.

He mentioned that Africa has a rare opportunity to transform its food system, create wealth, and feed its people.
