AGRICULTURAL, FORESTRY AND SEA FOODS EXPORTS IN JAPAN SURPASS 1 TRILLION YEN

The Japanese agricultural sector has recorded exports in agricultural produce surpassing the target of 1 trillion yen for the first time in the sector.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, there was a year-on-year increase of over 25 percent. The Ministry revealed that the total export amounted to 1.24 trillion yen which is nearly 10.8 billion dollars.

This was made known at a press briefing to address the nation on the progress made by the Agricultural sector so far.

The Chief Cabinet Secretary, Hirokaza Matsuno mentioned that “We want to promote the growth of the agriculture, forestry, and fishery industries by incorporating demand from overseas markets and stimulate regional economies,” Matsuno said.

It was disclosed that exports of scallops doubled while that of beef rose by 86 percent.

The ministry added that there has been a significant rise and increase in exports to retailers and online sales outlets. According to them, this rise in exports is attributed to the high demand for food at homes during the COVID-19 pandemic which restricted a lot of people from moving out of the house.

Also, the ministry recorded that demand for a wide range of food has increased since businesses and restaurants have picked up again in China and the United States to keep themselves active in serving people with people.

In relation to food exports to China, over 1.9 billion dollars was made from exports. This was followed closely by Hong Kong, and the United States making about 1.46 billion dollars in agricultural exports.

However, the Japanese government expects to increase the value of exports to 2 trillion yen in the next three years to come and increase its exports to 5 trillion yen by 2030. Also, the Japanese Government plans to encourage trade partners to lift import restrictions. The Government further added that it will support agricultural producers in Japan who wish to export.
