Egypt receives support from EU to enhance food security

Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, Supply and Internal Trade, Agriculture and Land Reclamation signed a grant deal for €40 million from the European Union to be implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in an attempt to improve food security in Egypt.

The grant’s aim is to put into practice agricultural mechanization initiatives for the production of improved grains and seeds.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Supply, it will work to build field silos and finish the €15 million information system that will regulate the movement of wheat in Egypt.

“The agreement signed between the European Union and the Italian Agency  for Development Cooperation comes in light of the efforts made by the Egyptian state, through development cooperation with multilateral and bilateral development partners, to face food security challenges resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war, in addition to strengthening national efforts in the field of grain production and storage, stimulating climate resilience and increasing the storage capacities of strategic grains,” Minister of International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat stated.

According to Al-Mashat, in support of these initiatives, the Ministry of International Cooperation established the “NWFE” program, a national platform for green projects.

In order to raise money for development projects at discounted rates that encourage climate action and serve as a model for regional and global development, this program serves as a venue for the participation of numerous development partners, private sector representatives, and other relevant parties.
