NII SACKEY AKUMAH VI – THE CHIEF OF ADANSE AND HEAD OF WETSE KOJO WE

Chief of Adanse and Head of Wetse Kojo We, Nii Sackey Akumiah VI formerly was known as Nii Aflah Sackey. Born on 4th February 1947, he is currently 73 of age. His father joined his ancestors when Nii Sackey was just at the age of 12 and since then he has lived with his mother, uncle and other family members.

Having six children from the paternal side from his grandfather, no legitimate ruler could be found as none of them gave birth to a male child. The father of Nii Sackey Akumiah out of desperation to have a child went to the fish mongers side to find a young lady to marry and this, he achieved. The woman was young enough to be his daughter and out of this union sprang forth their first child, Nii Sackey Akumiah VI.

Torn between a fisherman grandfather and an elite uncle, He was caught in a fix as to which of them to live with. Having a fear of what the future holds, he gained standard two level of education.

Tailoring was what he pursued next as a profession, “I was a very good tailor those days but now I can’t even see the hole of the needle to put the thread in,” he says. Ni Sackey Akumiah VI proved persistence as he furthered his education by himself; bought books, read, learnt words and improved himself. Lo and behold on December 24, 1979, he arrived in Nigeria despite encountering a lot of issues on the journey. It was in Nigeria that he received a letter from home informing him that he was needed to be enstooled as a Chief being the only qualitied person to fit the position from the paternal side. However, Ni Sackey Akumiah VI refused this position and let it go stating “I can’t come.”

Upon arriving in Ghana specifically Jamestown, he found out that Nii Sackey Akumiah V had been enstooled in his stead. In the middle of his assistance to the chief was when Nii Sackey Akumiah V also joined the ancestors. After several refusals from qualified people, Nii Sackey Akumiah VI with all gladness accepted the position and was finally enstooled and adorned on January 3, 1998 as the Chief of Adanse and head of Wetse Kojo We. After his enstoolment, it was realized that the main district Chief had some issues with his non-qualified state in relation to his educational level as a chief but being a man of justice and truth, he fought the main district Chief in court and won. This case saw the main district Chief pleading for the case to be taken out of court.

He was one of the founding fathers of the NDC odododiodio constituency and introduced Late Jerry John Rawlings to the people of Akoto Lantey when he wanted to contend as president. However after his enstoolment in 1998, he changed into a neutral being for reason of his belief that you can’t be a politician without telling lies. Some members of his family including some brothers form part of the people against his reign. Not focusing on them but channeling his efforts to leading the people, Nil Sackey Akumiah VI is known in James Town as a kind hearted leader, one that does not turn his back on the needy despite receiving little revenue from the chieftaincy position. He attributes his inspiration towards all this doing to some loopholes in the community and that something is lacking somewhere, he therefore believes someone must solve and eradicate those loopholes or problems. Aside this he believes the ancestors are pushing him to do what he does.

After he was enstooled his life changed in a variety of ways. He now began to receive respect from the elderly. Relating with the public now was done with carefulness tor fear of reputation being tarnished. Prior to he becoming a chief, he was a fueling-station attendant and after he was enstooled his life changed in a variety of ways. He now began to receive respect from the elderly. Relating with the public now was done with carefulness for fear of reputation being tarnished. Prior to he becoming a chief, he was a fueling-station attendant and contractor, who built a public toilet and supplied materials to the Armed Forces of Ghana. He regrets letting his children go after separating from his first marriage. The disappointment of children to prioritize education compelled him into his second marriage.

He traces the principle of helping the needy to a job interview in Tema where a stranger helped paid his transportation fare back home after failing the interview. Freedom, enjoyment and decision making without interference is what he desires for his people and that is why he is very much appreciative of the contract proposal from TIAST Group to help build a cassava factory in the community as he believes this proposal will help in fulfilling some of his goals for the people. He appreciates this very much as he will see his people being employed. He believes that a chief must be just, truthful and have the heart to help the needy, one that through him or her, the people under his/her territory will have a good life. Ni Sackey Akumiah VI, “the no nonsense man” he calls himself, is a very just man who is ready at all times to stand for justice and to speak out boldly and courageously the truth.

He desires to leave his people in a worthy state before he dies. As for his life, it is a definition of help to the needy ones and has since his enstoolment been there for his people in times of need. He is a Man of, by and for the people. He is a CHIEF worthy to be emulated.
