AGRIC MINISTER TOURS GADCO RICE FARM AND MILLING FACTORY IN VOLTA REGION

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto toured The Global Agriculture Development Company (GADCO) rice farm and the milling factory as part of his working visits in the Volta Region of Ghana. The visit made it possible for GADCO’s minister about GADCO’s efforts in the rice production value chain in cooperation with RMG Ghana Limited.

The minister disclosed government’s goal of being self-sufficient in rice production by 2023-2024. He added that this self-sufficiency will depend not only on the farmer, the land, or the seeds available, but also on the quantity of milling capacity.
In his remarks, he stated that rice consumption has increased, necessitating an increase in output to satisfy demand. As a result he praised GADCO for producing high-quality, well-packaged rice that is comparable to foreign rice and urged Ghanaians to consume more of the local rice.

GADCO is a vertically integrated agri-food operator focused on the production, processing, and marketing of packaged rice products in sub-Saharan Africa and currently has become one of the fastest growing rice producers in West Africa and the largest rice farm In Ghana.
GADCO’s Copa Rice brand is made up of high-quality Jasmine long-grain rice that is fresh, delicious, and nutritious. With a milling capacity of 3MT/hour, the company assists smallholder farmers by offering technical assistance and marketing opportunities.

GADCO also serves around 600 smallholder rice farmers in seven sites in the Volta and Greater Accra Regions, with a total land area of 1,400 hectares. As a result, eating Copa Jasmine long grain rice provides smallholder farmers with economic empowerment and long-term livelihoods. Mr. Joel Tsatsu, the general manager of GADCO in return said that they will support government to achieve the self-sufficiency goal because they believe in its possibility. Where he said, “We would like to use this opportunity to reiterate our full commitment to support the production of tons of local rice where Ghana will become self-sufficient in the near future.
